Major shake-up hits Armed Forces as Mahama makes key appointments

In a significant shake-up of the Ghana Armed Forces’ top leadership, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed new Acting Service Chiefs to take charge of the country’s military.

The changes, which take effect from March 24, 2025, are pending consultation with the Council of State.

The newly appointed Acting Service Chiefs are:

1. Brigadier General William Agyapong – Acting Chief of the Defence Staff

2. Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff

3. Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff

4. Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff

5. Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff

The move follows a meeting between President Mahama and the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House. The President expressed gratitude for their service and assured the new appointees of his confidence in their leadership.

This major shake-up signals a strategic shift in the Armed Forces, with the President aiming to reset Ghana’s defense priorities and strengthen national security.
