The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated the newly constituted governing board of the Volta River Authority with a call on them to help to strategically accelerate the country’s energy transition agenda.
The eight-member board is chaired by Jabesh Amissah–Arthur, an energy consultant.
Other members are Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, Dr Lawrence Ofosu Adjare, Collins Dauda, and Fred Kwesi Agbenyo.
The rest are Wonder Victor Kutor, Awulai Attibrukusu III and Peggy Addo.
Role
Mr Jinapor stressed the board’s critical role in steering the country’s flagship power utility through the nation’s accelerating energy transition agenda.
“This board has been entrusted with the task of improving VRA’s operations, optimising hydro and thermal assets, and firmly anchoring renewable initiatives within the authority’s core mandate.
“VRA must work to be the lead institution when it comes to power generation,” he said.
He mentioned operational revitalisation, accelerated green transition, human capital and local capacity and public and stakeholder engagement as priority areas for the President Mahama-led administration.
Mr Jinapor, therefore, called on the board to make these areas a key focus of their strategic direction for the VRA.
The sector minister further affirmed the government’s continued commitment and support to the board, adding, “The Ministry will give you the needed support to deliver on your mandate. President Mahama has absolute confidence in the capabilities of the members of this board.
“As a board, you should lead VRA to champion the reforms in the power sector,” he added.
Gratitude
The chairman expressed gratitude to the President for the appointment and pledged to work assiduously to salvage the dwindling fortunes of VRA.
“The fortunes of VRA have stagnated and dwindled over the years as a result of government policies.
“We will provide strategic guidance and direction to bring VRA back as the lead power generator in the sub-region and Africa,” he stated.
