Ghana Water closes Weija Plant for expansion — Here are the affected areas

The Accra West Region of Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has temporarily shut down the Weija Water Treatment Plant to carry out urgent repairs on major pipelines supplying water to parts of western Accra.
The shutdown, which began at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, is expected to last until 5:00 p.m. and will cause water supply disruptions across several communities.
Affected areas include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The GWL said in a statement issued today that the emergency works are necessary to fix critical faults in the pipeline network and to ensure long-term service reliability.
“Our engineers are on site working hard to ensure the work is completed on schedule,” the company noted.
GWL has apologised for the inconvenience and urged residents in affected areas to conserve water during the outage. Normal supply is expected to resume once the repairs are completed.
In September 2023, GWL took delivery of four new pumps to enhance the 120,000m³ daily average production capacity of the Weija Treatment Plant in Accra.
The treatment plant, which has two intake stations for raw water abstraction, is expected to produce about 26 million gallons of water a day.
However, according to the utility company, in the past three months, there have been problems with some of the old pumps at the intake stations, reducing production to about 20 per cent of the total capacity; roughly 5 million gallons a day.
