GJA President calls for establishment of Media Development Fund

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has underscored the urgent need to establish a Media Development Fund to help build the capacity of journalists and strengthen the country’s media sector.
According to him, such a fund would not only support the professional development of practitioners but also provide critical resources to media organisations struggling with operational challenges.
“It is important we establish the Media Development Fund to help build the capacity of journalists and support the media in some aspects,” Mr Dwumfour stated.
He made the appeal when the GJA leadership paid a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama.
During the engagement, he also sought the President’s support for the annual GJA Media Awards, which he described as a flagship event that celebrates journalistic excellence and recognises outstanding contributions within the industry.
Mr Dwumfour further proposed the introduction of special awards to motivate journalists, recalling that in the past, practitioners were honoured with significant donations such as vehicles and houses.
These incentives, he noted, have diminished in recent years, and reviving them would be a strong source of encouragement for journalists who continue to dedicate themselves to the profession.
