Black Starlets captain Joseph Narbi was named Man of the Match in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Togo in their opening game of the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship in Yamoussoukro on Sunday.
Narbi, who led from the front, scored Ghana’s opener in the 9th minute after latching onto a fine cross from Mark Aboagye. His early strike looked set to inspire the Starlets to victory, but the game quickly turned against Ghana when defender Gabriel Denyinah was shown a red card in just the 2nd minute, forcing the team to play almost the entire contest with ten men.
Despite the setback, Narbi stamped his authority in midfield, showing tireless energy, tactical awareness, and attacking flair. He nearly doubled his tally in the second half with a clever turn and shot, but Togo goalkeeper Ninkabou Gantin pulled off an excellent save.
Togo restored parity early in the second half when Sultan Ganiou converted from the penalty spot. Still, Narbi’s composure and leadership ensured Ghana remained organised and competitive until the final whistle.
The Man of the Match Award went to Narbi, whose all-round display earned admiration from supporters and tournament officials. Many have already tipped him as one of the standout prospects of the competition.
The Black Starlets will face hosts Ivory Coast in their second group match on Tuesday, with Narbi again expected to be central to Ghana’s hopes of securing a first victory.
