George Afriyie opposes call to sack Black Stars coach Otto Addo

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has expressed strong opposition to any move to dismiss Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

Addo, 49, is just one point away from guiding Ghana’s senior national team to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars, fresh off a commanding 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic, will conclude their qualifying campaign with a home clash against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Despite the team’s recent resurgence and the prospect of making history, Addo’s future has become a subject of public debate.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams, in a recent interview, suggested that while Addo has shown promise, he has also benefited from a measure of luck, indicating some reservations about the coach’s long-term tenure.

Adams added that the government would announce any decisions regarding the head coach at the appropriate time.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Afriyie argued that dismissing Addo now would be ill-advised. Instead, he advocated for bringing in a qualified assistant coach to support the former FC Nordsjaelland manager.

“Sacking Otto Addo at this point is not the right decision,” Mr Afriyie said. “We should get a more qualified coach to support Otto Addo.”

Kick-off for the decisive fixture against Comoros is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
