Biography

Shatta Wale is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall musician who began his career in 2004. He was born on October 17, 1984 in Accra, Ghana to Charles Nii Armah Mensah Snr and Madam Elsie Evelyn Avemegah. His father is a politician, businessman and legal practitioner.

Shatta Wale finished primary school in 1999 at Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman. He continued his education at Winneba secondary school from 1999 to 2002 after completing his basic education. He is best known for his singles “Dancehall King,” “My Level,” “We Taking Over,” and “On God,” among others. He rebranded himself from “Bandana” to Shatta Wale in 2013 after going down the drain and burying himself for ten years.

Shatta Wale has been a consistent artist in the music industry since the release of his “Dancehall King” song in 2014, which earned him the artist of the year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

Broke every rule in the Ghanaian industry to build his empire, Shatta Movement and introduced the SM 4LYF symbol. Fans on the street began to fall in love with his songs, and he received a lot of support from them.

Shatta Wale was supported massively by the fans on the street who always related to his songs about the struggles and pains of trenches to motivate them. He is also known to be a controversial Artist who has had a series of beef with his compatriots with the likes of Samini, Criss Waddle, Wizkid, Kwaw Kese, Yaa Pono, Kaaki, Tic Tac among others.

Since then, the Shatta Movement boss has been one of Ghana’s biggest exports, winning both local and international awards and endorsement deals with brands such as Guinness Ghana, Boss Baker Beef Roll, Rush Energy Drink, Storm Energy Drink, and others.

He was the first Ghanaian to organise a digital event on YouTube, dubbed the Faith Concert. The event was held to inspire Ghanaians and the rest of the world to fight the COVID-19 epidemic. The Ghanaian Ministry of Communications chose him and highlife musician Kuami Eugene as the headliners for the COVID-19 app virtual launch concert on Monday, April 13, 2020.

On Saturday, October 17, 2020, he celebrated his 36th birthday at his East Legon home with a large birthday party attended by family and friends.

In 2019, Shatta Wale collaborated with American female singer Beyoncé on a song titled “Already” on her “The Lion King Album,” which caught many Ghanaians off guard.

The song “Already” was widely accepted and made waves after music fans and lovers chose it as the best song from Beyonce’s album. The song was named “Best Collaboration” at the 2020 Break Tudo Awards and “Best Collaboration of the Year” at the 2022 Urban Music Awards and became the first Ghanaian musician to be Internationally awarded by RIAA.

Following his collaboration with Beyoncé, which remains one of the biggest projects to ever happen in the Ghana music industry. Shatta Wale announced the release of an album titled Gift Of Album, which best describes how he wants to showcase his God-given talent to the world. The album, which is still in the works, has gained huge popularity due to some top-tier artists who may appear on it, including Vybz Kartel, Efya Nokturnal, Medikal, and others.

Shatta Wale was arrested in October 2021 for causing fear and panic after a prophet predicted that he would die. He later turned himself at the poliin ce station after police declared him wanted. He was arrested by Ghana Police and remanded in prison for two weeks before being granted $100,000 bail on self-recognizance.

After serving two weeks in prison, Shatta Wale released a song titled “Jail Man” in which he talks about his struggles in prison and how he laid down his life for others in order forto stop giving false prophecies. He went ahead and drop a song titled “On God” which flew everywhere and undoubtedly became one of the biggest songs in 2022.

On Friday, March 19, 2023, Shatta Wale made a surprise announcement of a new album titled “Maali”. The album consists of ten of songs, all produced by Shatta Wale’s recording studio, Damaker and is described by the Shatta Movement boss as “Purely Dancehall” flavoured.

It includes legendary Jamaican dancehall heavyweight Vybz Kartel, who is the only artist featured on the album with a song “Mansa Musa,” which everyone thought would be on his impending “Gift of God” album.

Taking it, Inna Real Life, They Will Know, Heartless, Did My Time, Afrikan Kylie, Killa  Weapon, Richer than Last Year, and Show Mi are the other songs performed solo on the Maali album
