Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo stood tall as he accepted the much-coveted 2024 Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award on a night full of respect and worldwide solidarity.
The renowned Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City hosted the event on Monday, September 23, 2024, where the Ghanaian leader was honored alongside a number of other notable international personalities, such as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Korean media pioneer Miky Lee.
These trailblazers received recognition for their exceptional contributions to democracy, world peace, and human progress.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized in his acceptance speech that the honor belongs to the resilient people of Ghana and is not only his own accomplishment.
“This moment is not just about me—it’s about the people of Ghana, who inspire me with their resilience, strength, and unwavering belief in a brighter future,” the President stated, underscoring the depth of his connection to his nation and its citizens.
The foundation of his leadership, he continued, continues to be the people of Ghana, whom he referred to as “true global citizens.” He stated that despite obstacles like political unpredictability, economic headwinds, and global health problems, their sacrifices, optimism, and resolve keep the nation moving forward.
President William Ruto of Kenya, a friend and fellow African leader, gave the President an introduction during the event. Akufo-Addo celebrated a new generation of African leaders with this occasion, indicating that the continent has a bright future ahead of it.
The President of Ghana stressed the importance of international collaboration and the need for Ghana to work together to address global issues.
He highlighted the progress made in Ghana, such as strengthening democratic institutions and expanding opportunities for citizens. He also celebrated the strong relationship between Ghana and the United States, which has played a significant role in promoting human rights and the rule of law across Africa.
Akufo-Addo urged the international community to remain steadfast in confronting global challenges, such as climate change, political instability, and inequality. He emphasized the importance of unity in combating terrorism and violent extremism, urging peace, security, and prosperity through collective effort and resolve. The award underscores Akufo-Addo’s influence on the global stage as a champion for democracy, human rights, and international cooperation.
