Aston Villa Agree To Sign Ian Maatsen From Chelsea

ESPN has been informed by a source that Aston Villa and Chelsea have reached a deal for defender Ian Maatsen that is estimated to be worth £37.5 million ($47.7 million).

The 22-year-old started each match of the Champions League knockout phase as they advanced to this month’s Wembley final and made 16 Bundesliga appearances while on loan at Borussia Dortmund in the previous campaign.

According to a June 6 ESPN report, Dortmund was hesitant to use a £35 million ($44.5 million) release clause because they felt the move would be permanent and the valuation was too high.

Villa is now sure that personal terms will be finalized after acting swiftly to take advantage of the uncertainty by providing a sum over that clause.

The insider said Villa is prepared to extend Maatsen’s contract by six years. In the upcoming days, it is anticipated that negotiations regarding personal terms will continue.

Dortmund may or may not accept Villa’s offer; however, because they had objected to the asking price, a last-minute change of heart is regarded as doubtful.
