Atiwa Mining Pit Collapse Claims Two Lives
Following a mining pit collapse at Darkokrom, situated within the Atiwa East District of the Eastern region, two individuals engaged in illegal mining tragically lost their lives, while others were successfully rescued.
The incident, which transpired at approximately 10:00 pm on Thursday, occurred during the course of the illegal miners’ operations.
The deceased individuals in the collapse are Apim Larh and Simon, aged in their 40s and 20s respectively.
Despite the prompt efforts of local residents to extricate the victims from the particular mining pit, Simon and Apim ended up lifeless. The tragic outcome underscores the perilous nature of illegal mining activities and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in such operations.
The precise number of miners present in the pit at the time of the collapse remains undisclosed, leaving uncertainties regarding the total extent of the incident. This lack of clarity emphasizes the chaotic and hazardous conditions often associated with illegal mining operations, which pose risks not only to the individuals directly involved but also to the surrounding community.
Following the retrieval of the dead individuals from the scene, their remains are at Ankaase mortuary.
