Bayern Munich has reportedly made initial contact with Zinedine Zidane to explore the possibility of him leading the team in the upcoming season.
This move comes as Thomas Tuchel is set to depart this summer, following a decline in performance that saw Bayer Leverkusen clinch the Bundesliga title. Bayern officials have been in pursuit of a replacement for several weeks.
Xabi Alonso, manager of Bayer Leverkusen, was Bayern Munich’s primary target until he publicly announced his commitment to his current team, prompting Bayern to seek other options. As reported by MARCA, Bayern has initiated contact with Zinedine Zidane, who has been without a managerial role since his departure from Real Madrid in 2021. Zidane has expressed a desire to return to coaching and was previously linked with the France national team job, but Didier Deschamps’ contract extension until 2026 closed that opportunity. Whether Zidane would consider managing Bayern remains uncertain, given his preference to work in a country where he is fluent in the language.
Jose Mourinho has emerged as a possible contender for the Bayern Munich managerial position, along with Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick, both of whom have previous experience with the club. According to BILD, Nagelsmann, who was replaced by Thomas Tuchel in March 2023, is the leading candidate for the role. Currently managing the German national team, Nagelsmann’s contract is set to expire after the upcoming European Championships, although an extension has not been ruled out.
