Ghana Premier League champions Gold Stars gave their Muslim players a special opportunity by sponsoring their trip to the holy city of Makkah to perform Umrah (the lesser Hajj).
The group, which included deputy captain Vincent Atingah and Yakubu Haqq among others, returned to Accra on Saturday afternoon.
Their absence meant missing Gold Stars’ league opener against Bechem United at Dun’s Park.
However, coach Frimpong Manso’s side rose to the occasion, securing a convincing 2-0 victory to kickstart their title defense in style.
The players will join their teammates to prepare for their CAF Champions League preliminary qualifying round against Algerian side JS Kabylie this weekend.
