Black Queens play Algeria Saturday

Ghana’s Black Queens will face Algeria in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday in Morocco, after clinching a dramatic 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their final Group C match last Monday.

The national women’s team booked their place in the knockout stage alongside South Africa, finishing second in the group on four points—tied with Mali but edging them out on goal difference.

Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side endured a shaky start to the tournament, losing 2-0 to South Africa in their opener before salvaging a 1-1 draw against Mali.

With just one point from two matches, hopes of progressing were slim among many fans. However, the team rallied with a spirited and dominant display against Tanzania to secure qualification in style.

The resounding win not only revived their campaign but also restored faith among supporters who had begun to lose confidence in the squad’s chances.

Speaking after the match, winger, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, who has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence, expressed her pride in the team’s performance and spirit.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” she said. “They’ve got my back out there. As a vocal player, I try to lead and push the team to its best, and it’s amazing to see everyone working together.”

The Black Queens now shift their focus to Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Algeria, hoping to maintain their newfound momentum and advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
