Boehly to Be Removed as Chelsea Chairman in an Unusual Deal

According to reports, Todd Boehly will step down from his position as Chelsea chairman in 2027 under a distinctive agreement among the club’s owners. Boehly assumed the role of chairman following a consortium’s acquisition of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, which included Clearlake Capital, Hansjorg Wyss, and Mark Walter.

As per the Daily Mail, the co-owners agreed to rotate the chairmanship every five years, with the first change anticipated in 2027. Todd Boehly held the position under the takeover terms and must step down at the end of his term. Clearlake co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano may assume the role or appoint someone else, with Boehly eligible to return in 2032.

In recent weeks, Todd Boehly has encountered strong opposition from Chelsea supporters, with chants demanding his departure during matches. Perceived as the primary decision-maker at Stamford Bridge, much of this perception stems from the prominence of the takeover bid. Nonetheless, Behdad Eghbali remains a significant influencer within the club.

Rumors of tension between Boehly and Clearlake, notably concerning transfer matters, have surfaced, although Chelsea has consistently refuted such claims. A change in chairman wouldn’t alter Chelsea’s strategy, as major deals would still necessitate Boehly’s approval.

In 2022, Chelsea Football Club underwent a significant transition in ownership. This marked the end of Abramovich’s era at Chelsea, signaling a new chapter for the club. The acquisition represented a strategic move towards stability and growth for Chelsea. The consortium aimed to uphold the club’s legacy while steering it towards continued success in both domestic and international competitions.
