Borussia Dortmund Says Goodbye to Black Stars Coach Otto Addo

Otto Addo has left Borussia Dortmund, the German team, after six years of service.

In order to take up the position of head coach for Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, Addo, a former talent coach and scout for Dortmund, is departing.

The 43-year-old signed a 34-month contract with a 24-month option after being reappointed to this role in March.

Following the team’s dismal performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, when they were ousted in the group stage, Addo rejoined the Black Stars following Chris Hughton’s sacking.

Following Dortmund’s last matchup with Darmstadt, the team formally said goodbye to Otto Addo.

In April 2019, Addo, a former Ghana international, returned to Dortmund. In the 2020–21 season, he assisted the team in overcoming RB Leipzig to win the DFB Pokal Cup.

Prior to the 2022 World Cup playoff matchup between the Black Stars and Nigeria, Addo was first named the team’s temporary coach.

Despite the team’s early elimination, he successfully guided Ghana to the World Cup, which resulted to his temporary exit.

After coming back, Addo’s first two friendlies ended in draws with Uganda and a 2-1 loss to Nigeria.

As the Black Stars are ready to play Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on June 6 and 10, Addo hopes to lead the team back to victory.

With three points from two games, Ghana is now fourth in their qualification group.
