Former Real Madrid and Man City star Robinho has faced conviction on rape charges in Italy.
The Brazilian player would serve the jail term in his homeland Brazil even though the case was ruled in Italy. This is due to the fact that he left Italy long before the ruling was carried out. The court ruled that he can serve out his sentence after a failed attempt to extradict him to Italy to face his term.
A significant number of 8 out of 10 votes by the tribunal judges was in favor of the 40 year old star’s arrest and jail sentence. His lawyers and defense team however have the option of an appeal against the court ruling.
Robinho in his personal defense attributed the unfolding events to racism. He told Record TV: “I was convicted in Italy unjustly for something that did not happen and I have all the evidence to show that. I played four years in Italy and I got tired of seeing stories of racism. Unfortunately it happens today. That happened in 2013 and today we are in 2024. Which leads me to believe that the same people who do nothing against racism are the same ones who they condemned at my trial. If my trial were for a white person, it would be totally different, without a doubt.”
He is likely to file an appeal against the ruling soon enough according to reports.
