Cholera Outbreak Leaves Three Dead In Agona West

Following the cholera epidemic at Agona Swedru and nearby towns in the Central Region, three fatalities have been reported in the Agona West Municipality.

Eleven of the 200 probable cases that were reported have been verified as cholera by Swedru Municipal Government Hospital officials.

According to information from the Municipal Health Directorate, the three deceased individuals were among the 11 people confirmed to have the disease, according to Mr. Simon Asare, the Agona West Municipal Coordinating Director, who made this announcement during a stakeholder meeting at Swedru.

The Assembly had acted quickly to stop the disease’s spread.

Mr. Asare informed the group that Agona Nyakrom had been the source of multiple probable cholera cases, and that Agona Nkum had been designated as an epic center.

Chiefs, Assembly members, market women, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), media professionals, drivers’ unions, and representatives of the two major political parties—the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)—attended the conference.

He promised that in order to eradicate the dreaded and contagious sickness from the municipality entirely, the Assembly would work with health professionals.

After the main pipeline failed, Mr. Asare, who also serves as the Acting Municipal Chief Executive until a permanent appointment, stated that the Assembly had hired water tankers to provide water to Agona Nkum and the surrounding villages.

In order to restore the citizens’ access to water, the Assembly put pressure on the Ghana Water Company’s Swedru Office to expedite the repair of the damaged pipelines.

According to Mr. Asare, inhabitants of Agona Nykrom and Agona Nkum have been granted a three-month grace period to install toilets in every home in order to maintain a clean environment.

He warned that any landlord or landlady who disregarded the decree would face severe consequences from the Assembly.

He called on stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of a decongestion exercise that would shortly be conducted in Swedru’s Central Business District to guarantee the free flow of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
