Contractor Shuts Down Zabzugu Primary School Over Unpaid Debt
At Tuvugu D/A Primary School in Zabzugu, Northern Region, a six-unit classroom block awarded under contract by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) has been locked up.
According to reports, Mohammed Badaru, the contractor, has locked up the facility because he hasn’t received his payment for the project since 2017.
On Wednesday, Mr. Badaru broke into the school using padlocks, disrupting classes and telling staff and pupils to leave the building.
He disclosed that his suppliers, who are contemplating legal action, are extremely indebted to him.
In an interview with Citi News in Accra, the district director of education stated that the situation was grave and needed to be addressed right now.
Ahmed Yussif Adarkwa, the disgruntled District Chief Executive (DCE) of Zabzugu, charged the contractor with operating in bad faith.
He promised to collaborate with the district director of education to find a short-term solution for the students as a precaution.
In a parallel development, Friends of the Earth is a different school where, due to a shortage of classrooms, upper-class students are studying under trees.
However, the DCE has guaranteed that the school is making attempts to construct a classroom block.
