Belgium’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is facing a disappointing setback as he will be unable to participate in Euro 2024 due to a knee ligament injury, despite hopes for a potential return with Real Madrid. The 31-year-old goalkeeper has been sidelined for the entire season and underwent another knee operation in March after experiencing a setback in his recovery.
Although there is a possibility of Courtois making a comeback for Real Madrid before the season concludes, Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco has made it clear that Courtois will not be considered for selection in Euro 2024. This decision comes as a blow to the Belgian national team, as Courtois has been a key player with 102 caps for his country.
Courtois himself acknowledged in December that he would not fully recover in time to participate in the tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Germany this June and July. His absence from the squad marks a significant loss for Belgium, as they will have to rely on other goalkeeping options to fill his position during the championship.
“On this topic, everything has already been said. I don’t want a tit-for-tat situation,” Tedesco told German media on Tuesday.
“We are focusing on players who are in good shape.”
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed his desire to see Courtois return for Saturday’s La Liga match against Cadiz.
