Dr. Okoe Boye, Ghana’s Health Minister Bags International Appointment

Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, Ghana’s Health Minister, has been appointed as the Alternate Board Member for the Gavi Alliance, representing the Anglophone Africa constituency until December 31, 2026.

He replaced Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, with no objections raised by the constituency by the deadline of September 20, 2024.

His appointment awaits final approval by the Gavi Alliance Board. Dr. Okoe Boye’s leadership in health reforms and his previous role as CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) are expected to strengthen Anglophone Africa’s representation in Gavi’s mission to increase immunization access.

Dr. Okoe Boye, former Board Chairman of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, led reforms improving the hospital’s efficiency and patient care. As a public health advocate, he played a key role in Ghana’s COVID-19 response, boosting vaccination rates and publishing a book on the pandemic. His appointment to the Gavi Alliance Board will bring valuable insights from Anglophone Africa, contributing to global health governance and advancing Gavi’s mission to improve vaccine access in low-income countries. His involvement is expected to strengthen immunization efforts and health system resilience in the region.
