The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that it will provide replacement voter identification (ID) cards to individuals affected by the Akosombo dam spillage at no charge. This decision follows a request from Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who urged the EC to offer free replacements to those who lost their cards due to the recent spillage.
During a press conference on Thursday, May 16, Mr. Kwetey stressed the importance of addressing the situation promptly and urged the EC to show compassion towards the affected individuals.
Responding to the call, the EC released a statement on the same day, affirming its commitment to facilitating the participation of all eligible voters in the upcoming general election. They gave the assurance that the replacement process for the voter ID cards is to be free of charge for the spillage victims.
The EC’s announcement underscores its dedication to ensuring that every eligible voter, including those affected by unforeseen circumstances like the Akosombo dam spillage, has the opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote without any financial burden.
In agreement with Mr Kwetey’s suggestion, the EC stated
“The replacement of voter ID cards which is scheduled to commence from 30th May 2024 is intended to fulfil that duty,”
“Recognising the untold hardships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Fifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them.”
“In solidarity with the victims and as a gesture of goodwill, the commission is happy to announce that replacement of voter ID cards for victims of the Akosombo dam spillage will be free of charge.”
