Ebenezer Ofosu Asiedu, the head of ECOWAS’s Democracy and Good Governance Division, has said that Ghana’s voter registration doesn’t need to be externally audited because the issues can be resolved locally.
He asked all parties involved to settle the dispute amicably.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) organized a nationwide protest on Tuesday, September 17, along approved routes across all 16 regions of Ghana in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voter register. If the EC is still adamant, the NDC further promised to scale the protest up to the district EC offices.
Mr. Asiedu emphasized that there should be a chance to settle the disagreements between the two main parties over the electoral register, and he also stated that no outside agency should step in right once.
He spoke on JoyNews AM Show:
“We hope that these are some of the issues that are coming up, and we pray that the stakeholders involved would find a way to handle this amicably.”
“We believe that, at the end of the day, after today’s demonstrations, there will be an opportunity to reconcile whatever differing positions these two major stakeholders have on the electoral register. We do not see it as something that requires urgent intervention from any external body.”
