Just over a month after suffering severe injuries in a vehicle accident, Ecuadorian international Marco Angulo passed away at the age of 22, according to his club.
Since the October 7 incident in the south of Ecuador’s capital Quito, the LDU Quito midfielder has been in the hospital.
According to reports from Ecuador, he passed died on Monday night after undergoing many surgeries and more than a week in critical care.
With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito, who play in Ecuador’s top flight, said in a statement on Tuesday morning.
“We convey our condolences to his family and his loved ones.
“His passing is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.”
Angulo, a midfielder for MLS team FC Cincinnati, signed a loan deal with LDU Quito with a March buyout option.
Angulo played for the team 16 times. The day before the vehicle accident, on October 6, he made his final appearance.
Angulo won three caps for Ecuador after making his debut as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Iraq in November 2022.
Football player Roberto Cabezas of Independiente del Valle and his friend Victor Carcopa also perished in the accident, according to Ecuadorian media.
At the time, the automobile had two other passengers. It is uncertain what condition they are in.
