Ex-Dortmund Defender Hummels Signs For Roma

Mats Hummels, a former defender for Borussia Dortmund, has signed a free move to Roma, the Serie A club has announced.

Since his unexpected release by Dortmund in June, after he had assisted them in winning the Champions League the previous season, Hummels has been without a club.

With 133 line-breaking passes, he led all center backs in the competition. However, he was unable to guide them to victory against Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium, as they were defeated 2-0.

During his two stints at Dortmund, Hummels made a total of 508 games, winning two Bundesliga titles and placing second twice in the Champions League.

After selling Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal last month, the 2014 World Cup winner was rumored to be joining Bologna, but negotiations broke down with the Rossoblu.

Instead, he joined Danielle De Rossi’s Roma, who needed defense reinforcements when Chris Smalling left to sign with Al-Fayha of the Saudi Pro League.

Roma has announced that he will wear the number 15 shirt, and reports indicate he has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend his stay in the Italian city by an additional 12 months.

September 15 at Genoa might be Hummels’ debut, while a week later against Udinese could be his first home game.
