Ex-Minister John Tia Dies

John Tia, a former Information Minister, has passed away.

Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, confirmed the news to JoyNews. He stated that Mr. Tia died after a brief illness.

According to Salifu, Mr.Tia passed away at the Upper East Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 24.

John Akologu Tia, a politician and former Minister for Information, served as the Member of Parliament for Talensi from January 1993 until 2012.

He began his involvement in local politics in 1982 when he assumed the role of Press Secretary at the Upper East Regional Secretariat of Peoples Defence Committees/Workers Defence Committees, established by the Provisional National Defence Council military government.

John Tia won the MP seat in the 1992 parliamentary election under the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Since January 1993, he has represented the Talensi constituency.

He also served as a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament. President Mills appointed him as Minister for Information in 2009.

However, in 2012, he was defeated by independent candidate Robert N. Doameng Mosore in his attempt to keep the Talensi seat.

In 2016, he declared his intention to withdraw from future parliamentary elections.

John Tia additionally held the position of Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba during the tenure of former President John Mahama.
