Issa Hayatou, the previous President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has departed from this life.
He passed away at 77 years old.
During his time as CAF President, Mr. Hayatou’s right-hand man verified the passing of the longest-serving African football executive.
It appears that he died in Paris on Thursday, according to Cameroon Concord.
From 1988 until his replacement by Ahmad Ahmad, a Malagasy, in March 2017, Hayatou presided over CAF as its president.
In addition, he served as FIFA’s acting president from October 2015 until February 2016, when Sepp Blatter was suspended.
He oversaw the FIFA elections that installed Gianni Infantino as the organization’s leader.
“We have lost a remarkable leader, a man who devoted his life to the advancement of football in Africa. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to further develop the sport on the continent” a CAF spokesperson remarked as quoted by Cameroon concord.
