After playing football for almost 20 years, the 37-year-old declared on social media on Saturday that he was hanging up his boots. The former Netherlands international has chosen to end his career after last playing for Eyupspor in Turkey in 2023.
In a video message on X, formerly Twitter: “Woah, guys. As I look back on my career it feels surreal to think about how far I have come. From my early days at Ajax, to playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe. It’s been a journey full of unforgettable moments.
“Football gave me everything I dreamed of and so much more. Thank you to all my team-mates, coaches, fans and even the media who have been part of this incredible adventure. This game will forever be in my heart. Thank you.”

Babel played for a number of major European teams, including Galatasaray, Ajax, and Liverpool. Along the road, he won numerous prizes and amassed 69 caps for his country.
Babel had previously mentioned attempting to follow in the footsteps of his former Liverpool teammates Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso into management, but that may be put on hold for the time being.
