After manager Mark Robins was fired last week, Coventry City owner Doug King has stated that Frank Lampard is one of the candidates for the position of Sky Blues head coach.
King was asked some pointed questions by fervent supporters at an hour-long Fans Forum at the Coventry Building Society Arena. He said the club had received a lot of applications and that the next appointment was “very important.”
King disclosed that Lampard, a former Chelsea and England star, had applied for the job in a different interview with Sky Sports.
“We’ve received a huge amount of CVs from high quality people, of which Frank is one,” King said.
“We’ve done nothing on that process. Clearly we’re in the international break. We’ll be assessing everything.
“We’ll work out who’s going to make the shortlist and we’ll go from there.”
Since his brief return to Stamford Bridge as caretaker manager ended following the end of the 2022–2023 season, Lampard has been without a manager.
Prior to working at Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League, he led Derby County to the 2019 play-off final, giving him prior Championship experience.
After his stint in the Indian Super League and with Maccabi Tel Aviv, which concluded in June, former Sky Blues striker Robbie Keane has also been mentioned as a possible possibility, but Lampard is currently the clear favorite according to bookies.
Further
Ex-Coventry midfielder Lee Carsley, the current England Under-21 coach, whose role as interim boss of the full England men’s team is scheduled to come to an end next week, has been linked, along with Matt Bloomfield, boss of League One leaders Wycombe Wanderers.
The club stated in its job posting that it would “take its time to appoint a successor to Mark, although the position will be that of head coach working within the new structure set up by the club over the last two years” after deciding to split from Robins last Thursday morning.
For Saturday’s trip to Sunderland, King appointed Rhys Carr, a joint first-team coach, as interim manager.
King stated on Monday night that former Wolves development coach Carr will stay in the position until a permanent replacement has been found, following the team’s comeback from a 2-0 deficit to draw with the league leaders.
On Saturday, November 23, City will host Sheffield United, who are currently in second position, at midday.
