Frank Lampard, a former midfielder for Chelsea and England, has been hired for a two-and-a-half-year term as head coach of Coventry City, a Championship team.
With the team two points above the relegation spots and 17th in the Championship standings, Lampard, 46, takes over.
He is Sky Blues owner Doug King’s first new hire since completing his acquisition in January 2023, succeeding longtime manager Mark Robins, who was fired earlier this month after seven years in command.
After stints at Derby County, Everton, and Chelsea, Lampard will be in his sixth managerial position at Coventry.
Since his previous position as Stamford Bridge’s temporary manager ended in May 2023, he has mostly worked in the media.
Lampard’s first match in charge of the Sky Blues will be at home to Cardiff City on Saturday.
Career
Frank Lampard, son of former West Ham United legend Frank senior and nephew of Harry Redknapp, made his Football League debut in 1995. He played his first senior game for West Ham at 17 and made his career spectacular when he left for Chelsea in 2001. He made 649 of his 904 appearances for Chelsea, winning 11 major trophies and scoring 211 goals.
After Chelsea, he had a season at Manchester City and one campaign in America with New York City. After retiring as a player in 2017, Lampard began his managerial career in the Championship with Derby County in 2018. He almost guided Derby County to promotion in his first season, but lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in the play-off final.
After returning to Chelsea as manager on a three-year contract, he gave consistent senior opportunities to players like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, and Fikayo Tomori. He was sacked in January 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel. He returned to the Premier League a year later, appointed by Everton, but was sacked in January 2023.
