Franklin Cudjoe, the founder and president of IMANI Africa, has chastised the government for keeping the COVID-19 levy in place in spite of vocal requests from the business community to do away with it.
According to the government, the fee is still required to handle the pandemic’s enduring financial effects.
The business community had pushed the government to remove many unnecessary taxes, including the COVID-19 charge, ahead of the mid-year budget review.
The administration has defended its choice to maintain the levy in place in the face of these appeals.
While the immediate threat posed by COVID-19 has diminished, the pandemic’s financial impacts are still being felt, according to Abena Osei-Asare, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday.
However, Mr. Cudjoe underlined how much of a burden taxes are for Ghanaians.
In spite of the government’s heavy tax collection, he expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of infrastructure development and urged the Akufo-Addo administration to immediately eliminate the COVID-19 levy.
