Conor Gallagher, a midfielder for Chelsea, has decided to sign for Atletico Madrid.
Although the Blues had accepted a £33 million bid from the Spanish team the previous week, there were serious doubts regarding the England international’s desire to transfer.
However, 24 year old Gallagher informed Atletico authorities on Sunday night that he is excited to make the move.
The England international’s 18-year tenure at Stamford Bridge is set to come to an end when he takes off to finish his physicals and sign his contract.
Gallagher rejected Chelsea’s two-year contract offer with an additional year’s option because of the contract’s duration and the lesser squad role it offered.
Gallagher and Chelsea were naturally at odds since Gallagher was thought to be a poor match for the possession-based style of play of new manager Enzo Maresca and would not be a regular starter under the Italian.
Gallagher’s current Chelsea contract expires in less than a year. He participated in five matches at Euro 2024.
Chelsea let Atletico to seal a lower-than-expected deal because they would sooner sell Gallagher abroad than to a rival in England.
