Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper for Germany, has announced his retirement from international competition.
The 124-time World Cup winner played his final match for Germany last month when they were defeated by Spain in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 competition.
The 38-year-old goalie for Bayern Munich made his debut for his country in 2009 and competed in eight major competitions.
In addition to captaining Germany’s team prior to the 2018 World Cup, Neuer also started the team’s triumph against Argentina in the World Cup final in Brazil. Ilkay Gundogan took over as captain earlier this year.
Along with Gundogan’s statement this week, midfielder Toni Kroos also declared his retirement from international football following Germany’s home Euros.
After extending his contract with Bayern Munich until 2025 last year, Neuer will carry on with his club career.
