Ghana Water Company Prepares To Spill Excess Water From Weija Dam

The Ghana Water Company Limited’s (GWCL) management has declared their intention to start releasing surplus water from the Weija Dam.

The corporation clarified in a notice dated April 7, 2025, that the start of rainfall has caused the dam’s water level to rise steadily. Failure to discharge the extra water could result in the dam collapsing, which would be a serious risk to people’s lives and property, according to GWCL.

The firm indicated that the spillage would start at a modest rate to minimize the impact on downstream towns, but it did not provide a specific start date for the exercise. However, the amount of intake into the dam would determine the actual rate of release.

GWCL assured the public that the spillage would continue as long as water levels keep rising and expressed regret for any inconvenience the exercise may cause.
