Ghana Wins Slot To Host 2026 African Athletics Championships

After a tough bidding process, Ghana defeated Botswana to get the right to host the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Seniors Championships in 2026.

Ghana Athletics, the nation’s governing organization for athletics, declared on social media on Saturday that the West African country will serve as the host for the 2026 competition.

Ghana received twelve votes, while Botswana received just three, out of the fifteen nations that cast ballots to choose the future host of the competition.

A delegation led by Vice President Charles Osei Assibey, President of Ghana Athletics Bawah Fuseini, and Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Bawa Majeed led Ghana’s successful application.

Following the CAA General Assembly in Douala, Ghana was encouraged to bid for the 2026 African Athletics Championships, showcasing its world-class facilities from the African Games 2023 and the CAA Region II Seniors Championships.

Ghana is now expected to host another exemplary event in 2026. Meanwhile, three Ghanaian athletes have advanced to the semi-finals of the 100m events: Isaac Botsio and Edwin Gadayi in the men’s 100m, and Deborah Acheampong in the women’s 100m.
