The Black Stars’ World Cup qualification campaign suffered a major dent on Thursday as Ghana were held to a shocking 1-1 draw by Chad, sparking widespread frustration among fans.
Playing at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno, Ghana looked set for an easy win against a side that had lost all six of their qualifiers. The Black Stars started brightly and deservedly took the lead in the 17th minute when captain Jordan Ayew finished off a clever assist from Mohammed Kudus.
From there, many supporters expected a comfortable victory, but Ghana’s wastefulness in front of goal proved costly. Despite dominating possession they failed to create chances in the second half and couldn’t kill off the game, leaving the door open for Chad.
The unthinkable happened in the 89th minute when Celestine Ecua punished Ghana with a late equaliser. Fans, both in the stands and on social media, expressed their disappointment, labelling the result “unacceptable” given the gulf in quality between the two nations.
The draw, which leaves Ghana on 16 points at the top of Group I, feels more like a defeat to supporters, many of whom questioned the team’s mentality and tactical approach.
The Black Stars now turn their attention to a crucial home clash against Mali on September 8, with fans demanding a strong response.
