GMET Warns of Excess Rainfall in Coming Weeks
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) is advising the people to exercise extreme caution because its forecast calls for heavy winds and significant rainfall in the upcoming weeks, especially in the northern zone.
This was disclosed by GMet at the Water Resources Commission’s National Workshop on Floods and Drought Early Warning in Accra.
The goal of the workshop was to exchange and enhance the Volta Basin flood and drought simulation results.
Early warning systems to assist stakeholders in putting policies in place to lessen the effects of floods and drought were among the important topics covered, particularly for villages along the Volta Basin that frequently experience sea-level flooding.
Joshua Asamoah, a senior meteorologist at the Public Weather Office, told JoyNews that his organization had previously sent out a message indicating that the start of the rainy season will be marked by intense winds in addition to precipitation.
But he added that one benefit of the event is that the high gusts that accompany the rains would lessen the likelihood of floods in many areas.
He emphasized that as we are approaching the height of the rainy season, the most of the powerful winds that have affected the southern regions of the nation have already happened.
When there are indications of rain, Mr. Asamoah advised that people should seek shelter right away.
George Ayisi, the National Disaster Management Organization’s (NADMO) public relations officer, stated that steps are being taken to lessen the anticipated effects.
Mr. Ayisi said that his organization has been telling people to avoid areas with plenty of trees and to heed the Ghana Meteo’s weather forecasts and cautions.
