Accra Great Olympics faced a devastating relegation from the Ghana Premier League on the season’s final day, despite being awarded a walkover victory against already-relegated Real Tamale United (RTU) at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Olympics, along with Hearts of Oak, Legon Cities, Karela United, and Heart of Lions, were all involved in a tense battle to avoid relegation going into the last matchday.
Despite earning three points and three goals due to RTU’s absence, it wasn’t sufficient for the Wonder Club, who accumulated 44 points. Their hopes were dashed as their city rivals, Hearts of Oak, staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-2 victory against Bechem United, ensuring their stay in the top flight.
In other crucial matches, Heart of Lions drew 2-2 with Berekum Chelsea, Legon Cities tied 1-1 with Gold Stars, and Karela United clinched a 1-0 win over Medeama.
As a result, Accra Great Olympics will drop to the Division One League next season, joining Bofoakwa Tano and Real Tamale United. They will be replaced by Young Apostles FC, Basake Holy Stars, and Vision FC, who earned promotion from the Division One League.
This news is difficult for Olympics fans, who now hope for a swift return to the top tier.
Meanwhile, celebrations are underway in Samreboi as league champions Samartex prepare to be crowned following their 2-0 victory over Accra Lions at Nsenkyire Park. This marks Samartex’s first Ghana Premier League title, achieved with two games remaining in the season.
