Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams strongly condemns racism in football, emphasizing that such actions cannot be tolerated, especially in light of the recent racist incident that occurred in the Spanish League. Speaking to Bilbao media following Athletic Bilbao’s 3-1 defeat against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano during a Spanish League fixture over the weekend, Williams made his stance clear on the matter.
His comments reflect a growing concern within the football community regarding racism, highlighting the need for continued efforts to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity within the sport. Williams’ outspoken stance underscores the importance of addressing these issues head-on to ensure a fair and respectful environment for all players and fans alike.
After becoming the target of racist taunts in the first half, Inaki’s younger brother Nico was compelled to stop the game so that the incident could be resolved before it could continue.
After Nico scored a goal for Bilbao and celebrated by pointing to his skin, Inaki, who had spoken out vehemently against the racist shouts, gave him an embrace.
“It’s not the first time it has happened. In these type of things we have to build together not only in football but a good world in which these type of actions cannot be tolerated. I think this scourge has to end. I think that in the end, people have to understand that it is not easy to put up with this type of insult.”
The Williams brothers are from Ghana, although Nico plays for Spain and Inaki for the Black Stars of Ghana. Both brothers contributed significantly to Bilbao’s victory in this year’s Copa Del Rey, the team’s first in forty years.
