Jerome Opoku Exits Black Stars Squad For AFCON Qualifier Due To Injury

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has informed that Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has departed the team’s camp in Morocco owing to an injury.

Opoku will not play for the Black Stars against Niger in the forthcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F qualifier.

The GFA stated that the defender for İstanbul Başakşehir complained of pain in his left gluteal muscles, which was made worse by the unfavorable training pitch conditions in Kumasi.

Opoku has returned to Turkey for treatment, including ultrasound-guided injections, after a medical evaluation. His goal is to recuperate in time for his club’s upcoming Turkish Super Lig encounter.

With Joseph Paintsil already sidelined before of the team’s departure to Morocco owing to issues with his visa and passport, Opoku’s absence represents the Black Stars’ second player loss.

With the critical encounter against Niger slated for Monday at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, kickoff at 16:00GMT, coach Otto Addo is currently down to 22 players.

Opoku did not play in the Black Stars’ previous match against Angola, which took place last Thursday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

After losing their opening game at the Baba Yara Stadium against Angola 1-0, Ghana is looking to win their first game.
