Jordan Ayew has been named captain of Ghana by head coach Otto Addo for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying phase.
Next week, the Black Stars will play their last qualifying matches against Niger, who are at the bottom of the group, and Angola, who have already qualified.
On November 15, 2024, Ghana will journey to Luanda to play Angola at the Estádio 11 de Novembro. On November 18, 2024, Ghana will return home to play Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.
In the absence of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey, Addo announced Jordan Ayew as the new captain during Thursday’s squad announcement.
This comes after a recent conversation between Addo and Ayew, who presently plays for Leicester City.
After Ghana’s dismal results—a 2-0 loss and a 0-0 draw—damaged the team’s chances of qualifying, Addo made the controversial decision to name Mohammed Kudus of West Ham as captain for the doubleheader against Sudan earlier in October.
Jordan Ayew will captain the team in the forthcoming important games because Partey is currently unable to play. With a 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 tie with Niger, Ghana is now winless after four games.
The Black Stars lost 2-0 in Libya after drawing 0-0 at home in their last doubleheader versus Sudan.
Ghana needs to win both of their remaining games and pray that Sudan loses their next games against Angola and Niger in order to have any chance of qualifying.
