Parliament will carefully examine the costs related to Ghana’s hosting of the 2023 African Games, according to Kofi Adams, Minister-Designate for Sports and Recreation.
The 13th African Games were held in Ghana in 2024, but there was a lot of controversy over the government’s financial investment for the competition.
The people reacted negatively to the alleged $245 million spent by former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif. This amount includes $195 million for infrastructure, $15 million for athlete food during the 15-day event, and $48 million for operating expenses.
The Local Organising Committee justified the expenses by stating that they were essential to the success of the event.
Adams assured the reporters at the Accra Sports Stadium that the investigation will adhere to due process in order to guarantee accountability.
“I remember in Parliament, issues were raised about it. The only unfortunate thing is that we couldn’t take the report of the committee that looked into areas of sports before the 8th Parliament was dissolved.
“But the 9th Parliament is back, and we can see what we can do about that report—whether it will be retabled or the issues will be referred to the committee again for review and resubmission for consideration.
“So, we are not ruling out anything. But let’s go through the processes first, and then we’ll see what they look into and what will come out of it,” Adams said.
Kofi Adams is awaiting parliamentary approval of his nomination after undergoing vetting. Once confirmed, he will officially assume the role and oversee efforts to ensure transparency in the nation’s sports administration.
