Komenda Residents Plan Demo Against Sugar Factory Lease

The Ghana Police Service has been informed of the planned protest by the Komenda Traditional Area’s Concerned Citizens on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

The group anticipates at least 2,000 participation from the Komenda Traditional Area and surrounding areas, according to a statement dated August 5.

Starting in Komenda Township and concluding at Komenda Junction, the demonstration is scheduled to begin at six in the morning.

The Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), Section 1, Clause 1, mandates that special events in public spaces be reported to the police at least five days in advance. This activity complies with that requirement.

The government’s decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian company is being opposed by the demonstration.

The demonstrators support the facility going back to its original purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar, and they demand that the lease deal be reversed.

They argue that there was insufficient stakeholder consultation or proper protocol following in the lease deal.
