Kufuor Delivers Key Message To The Youth Ahead Of Dec. 2024

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor encouraged Ghanaian youth to take part in the December elections, emphasizing their role in Ghana’s progress.

Speaking at the launch of the Kufuor Scholars Foundation, he underscored the importance of youth in shaping the nation’s future and urged them to recognize their power as influencers in the electoral process.

Parts of his speech reads:

“Ghana alone has about 30 million citizens and with your learning and mature brain power throughout our societies, if you would do what you should do as responsible citizens to try to give the nation good leadership, inclusive leadership, if you would do that, then I tell you, within a few years you will see Ghana turning around to really be coming up, to be emulated on the continent of Africa to better the lot of humanity.”

Only 13 million of the approximately 17 million Ghanaians who were eligible to vote in the 2020 elections actually did so.

Concerns about voter apathy, economic difficulties, and dissatisfaction with governance are reasons some individuals may choose not to vote.

The upcoming December 7 election is particularly critical, with a survey by the Kufuor Scholars Foundation indicating that 43% of every 1,000 Ghanaians surveyed do not plan to vote.

To address this, the Kufuor Scholars Programme, in partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education, has launched a voter education campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of voting.

Former President Kufuor highlighted the potential influence of Ghana’s youthful population, stressing the importance of their active participation in ensuring positive change.

Key figures attending the launch included Prof Agyemang Baffuor Duah, CEO of JAK Foundation; H.E. Harriet Thompson, British High Commissioner to Ghana; Dr Pascal Brenya, KSP Coordinator; Nana Ama Oppong Duah, Policy Advisor at the JAK Foundation; and Irene Horsham (Esq), Rector of Mountcrest University.
