The Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II, was destooled by the kingmakers of Kwawu Abene in the Kwawu East District of the Eastern region, in a unanimous decision.
In order to solidify the destoolment, the kingmakers conducted ceremonies at Kwahu Palace in Abene on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
The move comes after Daasebre Agyapong II resigned from his position as the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) board chairman due to GH₵2 million extortion charges.
The kingmakers’ representative, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV, ruled that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II’s title of Kwawuhene was null and void.
“Nananom, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II is no longer the King of Kwawu. We assure you that we will find another formidable replacement for the benefit of all indigenous people in Kwawu,”
Collins Darkwa, an ADB client, filed a petition with the Office of the President, claiming that the Kwahumanhene had demanded a large sum of money from him in return for a GH₵12 million loan.
The merchant stated that in order for the chief to approve the 12 million Ghana cedis, he required an upfront payment of GH₵50,000.00 and an additional loan.
Thus, he made a request to the President for assistance in getting GH₵2,408,000.00 back from the outgoing Board Chairman.
“Under pressure from my suppliers to procure logistics for the cashew to be supplied, I had no other choice than to agree to the conditions”, Mr. Darkwa said.
Later, while inquiries into the claim were being conducted, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) instructed the chief to step down as the chair of the ADB board.
