Lack Of Goal-Line Technology In La Liga Explained

Because La Liga lacks goal-line technology, Barcelona had a disputed goal disallowed in an El Clasico.

Six minutes after Andreas Christensen gave Barcelona the lead, Vinicius Jr. equalized the score with a penalty kick to put his club back in the contest. When Lamine Yamal glanced Raphinha’s corner toward goal in the 28th minute, it appeared to cross the line before Andrey Lunin rushed to clear it. The VAR first examined the hit from several perspectives before giving the Catalan giants a corner.

El Larguero stated before of the 2023–2024 season that president Javier Tebas of La Liga would not be paying the £2.6 million ($3.2m) needed to install goal-line technology, meaning the league would remain the only elite European league without it.

Tebas took to X to address his detractors after supporters of Barcelona criticized La Liga head for not using goal-line technology, detailing a number of previous instances in which goal-line technology was shown to be incorrect. He captioned it with, “no comment.”

In 2014, the Premier League became the first elite league in Europe to use goal-line technology, motivated by Frank Lampard’s goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup. By 2015, the English league has been adopted by the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and Eredivisie.

The Blaugrana’s next game is a vital league encounter against Valencia at home on April 29.
