Arne Slot, the candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp, has struck an agreement in principle with Feyenoord on compensation.
Slot was among Liverpool’s list of contenders from the beginning of a protracted, demanding process, and he topped it after they completed due diligence on all the important criteria. Last season, Slot guided the Dutch team to just their second Eredivisie title this century.
Xabi Alonso, who was a prominent contender for every elite team looking to replace their manager this summer, eliminated himself from the running by choosing to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite the publicity around him, Liverpool had shortlisted Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, and the team had always said he wasn’t their top choice.
He met a number of criteria, but his style of play—especially when he played three at the back—and long-term goals did not mesh with Liverpool’s existing roster or age-group philosophy.
Claims that Amorim was not the front-runner for the Anfield position due to budgetary constraints have been dismissed as untrue.
The 39-year-old’s highly public meeting with West Ham has also been questioned; an intermediary said Amorim was attempting to exert pressure on Liverpool by demonstrating his alternatives.
