Liverpool winger completes move to Bayern Munich

Liverpool winger Luis Díaz completes move to Bayern Munich till 2029

Colombian international Luis Díaz says he has “fulfilled his duty” at Liverpool after completing a £65.5 million transfer to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the German giants, bringing his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield to an end.

Díaz was left out of Liverpool’s pre-season clash against AC Milan on Saturday amid increasing speculation surrounding his future.

Liverpool had rejected an initial £58.6 million bid from Bayern earlier this month but accepted an improved offer of £65.5 million over the weekend, allowing the winger to undergo a medical in Germany.

Díaz departs Anfield as a Premier League champion and with four major trophies to his name. However, he described the recent death of teammate Diogo Jota as a heartbreaking moment that overshadowed his farewell.

“I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” Díaz wrote on Instagram.

“I have met incredible people, fabulous teammates, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.”

“It’s good to be leaving with the feeling of a duty fulfilled and, most of all, to be leaving a champion. It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way.”

“I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”

Díaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37 million. He scored 41 goals in 148 appearances for the Reds.

During his debut season, he lifted both the FA Cup and EFL Cup and played in the 2022 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. He enjoyed his most prolific campaign last season, netting 17 goals across all competitions as Liverpool secured the Premier League title.

His departure brings Liverpool’s summer sales to around £115 million, helping to offset approximately £270 million spent on new signings Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.

The Reds remain interested in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who did not join the Magpies on their Far East tour and is believed to be considering a move away from the club.
