Tottenham easily defeated Manchester City, who have now lost five straight games for the first time since 2006, thanks to two goals from James Maddison.
On a spectacular night that ended City’s 52-game unbeaten streak at Etihad Stadium, which dates back to right before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Pedro Porro scored a third goal before Brennan Johnson added a fourth in the final minute.
Since a 5-1 loss to Tottenham’s north London rivals Arsenal in 2003, this is City’s worst home league loss.
They also lost three straight Premier League games for the first time under Pep Guardiola, who 48 hours previously had agreed to a two-year contract extension.
The Tottenham supporters enthusiastically embraced Porro’s goal, jokingly chanting, “You’ll be fired in the morning,” at Guardiola.
Tottenham, who had lost their previous game 2-1 at home to Ipswich two weeks prior, had five teenagers on the bench, and traveled north without both of their first-choice central defenders. It was an incredible turnaround.
In contrast to City, Ange Postecoglou’s team ridiculed their issues. Since a 5-2 loss to Leicester in September 2020, when Maddison was one of the Foxes’ scorers, it was their worst home loss.
The way the match went only served to draw attention to the absence of injured midfielder Rodri, who was the focus of a lavish pregame celebration on his first return to the stadium since taking home the Ballon d’Or.
If Liverpool wins at Southampton on Sunday, they will increase their lead at the top to eight points, while City will still be in second place.
Tottenham is now four points behind City and in sixth place.
