Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting, is being considered by Manchester United to succeed Erik ten Hag.
Due to the team’s dismal start to the season, Dutchman Ten Hag was fired on Monday.
Amorim, 39, is a well-liked coach who, since joining Sporting in 2020, has led them to two Portuguese league titles, including their first in 19 years.
We don’t know how much has been discussed about Amorim.
Furthermore, it is unclear if other candidates are still in the running for the Old Trafford position.
But Amorim is suddenly emerging as the front-runner.
Portuguese Amorim stated during a press conference on Monday that he was not ready to discuss the Manchester United position, but he was expecting a question about it.
Although United has named Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s deputy, as their interim manager, they have yet to say how long the Dutchman will hold the position or whether he will undoubtedly be present at Old Trafford on Wednesday when they play Leicester in the EFL Cup.
Van Nistelrooy holding a news conference prior to Tuesday’s game has already been disqualified by the club. Ten Hag discussed the EFL Cup match following West Ham’s loss on Sunday.
Others with knowledge of United’s finances have indicated that this won’t be an insurmountable problem, despite United’s discussion of the financial burden of compensating Ten Hag and a new coach.
In order to acquire Amorim’s services in 2020, Sporting paid Braga, his previous club, 10 euros (£8.3 million).
West Ham and Amorim, whose contract expires in June 2026, had discussions in April but were unable to come to an agreement. The Portuguese then apologized to Sporting for having talks behind the club’s back.
With three victories from their first nine games, Manchester United dropped to 14th place in the Premier League after their 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday.
After drawing their first three games, they are currently ranked 21st out of 36 clubs in the Europa League standings.
