Martinez Suspended Over ‘Offensive Conduct’

Fifa has banned Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for “offensive behavior,” meaning he will miss Argentina’s next two games.

The two events during this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia are the reason for the suspension.

Martinez held a counterfeit Copa America trophy against his groin after the team defeated Chile 3-0 on September 6, replicating his infamous celebrations following the 2022 World Cup victory.

Argentina played its first game since emerging victorious from the Copa America in the US in July.

On September 10, following Colombia’s 2-1 loss, Martinez struck a cameraman on the field with his gloves.

Although it disapproved of the suspension, the Argentina Football Association claimed Martinez was “responsible” for his acts.

He won’t be there for the October qualifying matches against Bolivia and Venezuela.

After winning the Golden Glove award for best goalie at the 2022 World Cup, Martinez positioned the trophy next to his groin.
